17 of February: TUTORS AND HARRY POTTER
I have to start this post by saying that today has been, until the date, my favourite day (mainly because of the activities we have done) so far.
In relation
with the content that we have seen, today we have reviewed some of the other
part of the subject: Tutorial Action. Until now we have only seen topics
related to educational guidance, but this time we have reflected upon the
concept of tutor, which is the one that is in charge of guiding you through all
the educational process. The reflexion starts when talking about the qualities
or the way of performance that a teacher and a tutor should have, in other to
be the best.
In my opinion, it is easy to be a good teacher, teach something is usually not complicated, as you just have to learn about the topic you have to explain and have some resources in order to make it understandable for those who are learning it. The problem is when talking about being a good tutor. Not everyone that is good at teaching is good at tutoring, as (at least in my opinion) a good tutor should make a further approach to their students, they have to understand them and their circumstances (their environment), support them with any problem that they might be facing and finally, taking that into account, motivate them to learn. A good teacher should have both qualities, as teacher are not only teachers, but tutors. You can know about a specific subject and how to explain it, but if you don’t know how to be a good tutor, you have failed as a teacher.
To compare the
perspective of different tutors or ways of tutoring, we have done an activity
that, personally, I really enjoyed. The activity consisted of watching two
clips of the movie “Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban”, one that shows
the teaching perform of professor Remus Lupin, and other that shows the one of professor
Severus Snape, and make a comparison upon them.
The reason
because I liked it a lot was not only because it was a clear way of comparing
different tutor attitudes and to see if what we thought about tutoring (the characteristics
of a good tutor) were features that these characters had, but also because of
the use of films as a way of examples for the topics the teacher explains.
Personally, I have loved the Harry Potter saga since I was 8 years old, and to
get to use it as examples of what I am learning has been awesome. I also consider
that this kind of activities should be done often, as they help the students to
get approach with the content (as they related with things they enjoy, movies
of their taste…).
